Amazon Unveils Premium Kindle Reader Called Kindle Oasis

Posted on April 14, 2016

Amazon has unveiled a new tablet called the Kindle Oasis. The new high-end tablet is the lightest and thinnest Kindle yet from Amazon. At $289.99 it also has a higher price than Amazon's other Kindle readers. This is $90 more than the Kindle Voyage.

Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos says in the announcement, "To lean back and read for hours, you need a sanctuary from distraction. We want Kindle to disappear, and Kindle Oasis is the next big step in that mission. It's the most advanced Kindle we've ever built—thin and ultra-lightweight, it gets out of the way so you can lose yourself in the author's world."

The Kindle Oasis weighs 4.6 ounces and is 3.4 mm thin. Amazon says this makes it 30% thinner and 20% lighter than the other Kindle devices. Amazon says the thin device is still strong thanks to a featherweight polymer frame that is plated with metal by structural electroplating.

The device is balanced for one-handed reading and contains an accelerometer that detects whether you are reading with your left or right hand. The page button rotate to match which hand you are using.

The Kindle Oasis has a 300 ppi Paperwhite 6-inch display designed using a 200 micron display backplane. The built-in front light features 60% more LEDs making it the brightest Kindle display yet. It has 4GB of storage which can hold thousands of books. The device has a dual-battery system that Amazon says gives it months of battery life with the charging cover on the device. The included charging cover is available in black, merlot, or walnut.

The Kindle Oasis will be released on April 27, 2016. It is available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Take a look:
