Australian Town Bans Bottled Water

Posted on July 9, 2009

An Australian town called Bundanoon has banned bottle water sales. News.com.au reports that the town will install new free water fountains instead. Bloomberg reports that the town will sell reusable bottles filled with filtered water from fountains in the town but commercially bottled water won't be sold.
Stores will sell reusable bottles to be filled from filtered water fountains in the town, instead of commercially bottled water being trucked in. The local community and businesses overwhelmingly support the idea, said Huw Kingston, who is spearheading the initiative.

"Our little town hall was packed to the rafters with over 350 people which is the biggest community meeting the town has had," Kingston said by telephone today. "We had a vote at the end and almost all of the more than 350 people voted yes, while one person voted no."
They are the first town in Australia to ban bottled water in an effort to help the environment.
