Barnes & Noble Acquires Some Borders Intellectual Assets
Posted on September 16, 2011Barnes & Noble grabbed the bulk of Borders' intellectual assets at an auction today. The assets included customer information and the Borders.com domain name. It is not certain that Barnes & Noble's asset purchases included the Borders.com domain name, but it appears likely as Barnes & Noble dominated the bidding.
When a retailer goes out of business the assets, including trademarks and domain names, are sold. For example, the Circuitcity.com and Linensnthings.com websites still operate today with the retailer's original logos, but the websites are run by new owners. If Barnes & Noble bought Borders.com they will probably just redirect users to its website rather than continue to operate the Borders.com domain.
