Giant Panda Mei Xiang Gives Birth at Smithsonian's National Zoo

Giant panda Mei Xiang have birth at Smithsonian's National Zoo. She immediately began cradling her new cub. This is Mei's third cub. Mei first cub, Tai Shan, was born in July 2005 and now lives the Panda Base in BiFengxia in Ya'an, China. Her second cub was born in September 2012 and died six days after birth from liver damage. The new cub gave healthy squeals after being born.
Dennis Kelly, director of the Smithsonian's National Zoo, said in a statement, "I'm glued to the new panda cams and thrilled to hear the squeals, which appear healthy, of our newborn cub. Our expansive panda team has worked tirelessly analyzing hormones and behavior since March, and as a result of their expertise and our collaboration with scientists from around the world we are celebrating this birth."
