Pope Francis Celebrates Easter in St. Peter's Square

Posted on April 20, 2014

Pope Francis celebrated Easter in St. Peter's Square with 150,000 people. The Holy Father conducted mass and spoke of peace during his homily. Dutch florists donated thousands of flowers which decorated the square. As always, the liturgy for the day began with the ancient rite of the "Resurrexit" and concluded with the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" blessing and Easter message by the Holy Father. He spoke of the situation in Ukraine, saying "By your resurrection, which this year we celebrate together with the Churches that follow the Julian calendar, we ask you to enlighten and inspire the initiatives that promote peace in Ukraine so that all those involved, with the support of the international community, will make every effort to prevent violence and, in a spirit of unity and dialogue, chart a path for the country’s future."
