Starbucks Launches Flat White Espresso

Posted on January 9, 2015

Starbucks has introduced a new espresso beverage called the Flat White in its cafes in the U.S. and Canada. The espresso drink is already popular in Australia and the UK. The espresso originated in Australia in the 1980s.

The espresso beverage is made with two ristretto shots combined with a thin layer of velvety steamed white whole milk. The beverage is finished with a latte art dot on the top. Starbucks says the ristretto shot provides a sweeter and more intense coffee flavor than a regular espresso.

Christine Barone, vice president, Espresso and Brewed, Starbucks Coffee Company, says in a statement, "The growing sophistication of coffee drinkers around the world and in the United States makes the Flat White a perfect beverage for coffee lovers. As a global company, we have the opportunity to find inspiration from our cafes around the world and bring products to our customers that offer ways to further explore coffee like this handcrafted beverage."

CNN reports that a 12 oz Flat White contains 170 calories and 9 grams of fat. CNN's Australian anchor Michael Holmes tried the new Flat White - there is a Starbucks in the building. Holmes says Starbucks "rose to the occasion" with its new beverage. He does says the Starbucks roasts its beans more than they do in Australia. Take a look:
