Posted on February 6, 2013
Theo Chocolate, an organic and Fair Trade certified chocolate maker, has partnered with Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI), founded by Ben Affleck, to launch a new chocolate bar made from 100 percent Congolese cocoa. The candy bars come in two flavors: Pili Pili Chili, a blend of cocoa, vanilla, and pili pili peppers, and Vanilla Nib, a mix of cocoa, vanilla, and cocoa nibs.
The candy bars can currently be found at U.S. Whole foods stores and will roll out in other grocery and drug stores later this month. The chocolate bars cost $4.99. A portion of proceeds will be donated to ECI to improve the livelihoods of farmers and their families in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Ben Affleck, founder of ECI, said in a statement, "This partnership combines Theo’s extensive background building sustainable, fair trade supply chains around the globe with ECI's history working with the Congolese people to develop economic opportunities that serve as a foundation for stability and success. Together we have the potential to help tens of thousands of people improve their lives in the short term and make a positive impact for generations to come."
