40 Million Accounts Affected in Target Credit Card Breach

Posted on December 19, 2013

There was a massive credit card breach at Target with 40 million credit cards affected. ZDNet reports that customer name, credit card or debit card number, expiration date and CVV security code were obtained by hackers in the breach. This was an in-store breach and not an online hack.

KrebsonSecurity was the first site to report the breach. Krebs says the breach involves the theft of data stored on magnetic strips on the back of cards (called "track data") used at Target stores. A Target statement says the unauthorized access to credit card data occurred between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15. Black Friday was on Nov. 29.
Approximately 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been impacted between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013. Target alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately after it was made aware of the unauthorized access, and is putting all appropriate resources behind these efforts. Among other actions, Target is partnering with a leading third-party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel says they are working with law enforcement to have the criminals who illegally accessed its data arrested. Steinhafel says in a statement, "Target's first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice."

Time has published a helfpul FAQ about the breach here that says this incident does not impact you if you shopped on target. However, if you shopped at Target during the Nov. 27 to Dec. 15 time period you will want to closely monitor the card you used for unauthorized charges.
