Albertsons to Remove Self-checkout Lanes
Posted on July 8, 2011In a major trend reversal, Albertsons is removing self-checkout lanes from its stores. Today reports that 100 Albertsons' stores have self-checkout lanes and the grocery store chain is eliminating the self-service lanes from all 100 stores.
Albertsons told Progressive Grocer that the self-checkout lanes are preventing it from providing a high enough level of service to its customers. Albertsons spokesperson Christine Wilcox told Progressive Grocer. "As we've changed our stores over the last five years to better meet the needs of customers, we noticed that our Self Checkout Lanes weren't allowing us to provide the customer service experience that we want people to have when they shop with us."
Self-checkout can be convenient for shoppers with just a few items, but often it is faster and easier for customers to use a full-service checkout. The self-checkout lanes often require a store employee or two to help customers and expedite the self-checkout process.
Kroger is running a test in one of its Texas stores, where they have completely removed self-checkout.
