Amazon Offers Free Shipping on Some Small Items

Posted on June 3, 2015

Amazon has started offering free shipping on some small items with no minimum order requried. Bloomberg is reporting that some of the items include makeup, earplugs and mobile phone accessories. Shoppers do not need to part of Amazon Prime to get the free shipping discount.

The items that are part of the service are light items that weight 8 ounces (230 grams) or less. They also tend to cost under $10. The items do not ship quickly. Bloomberg says the items are shipping by an Amazon's department called Fulfillment by Amazon Small and Light based in Kentucky. It takes four to eight business days for the items to arrive. Bloomberg says most of the inventory will come from third party merchants on Amazon.

Amazon senior manager Neil Ackerman told Bloomberg, "Customers love that even if it's a $5 item, shipping is free for everybody, Prime member or not."

The free shipping offer will likely boost sales of the items that are part of the deal and could impact Amazon's competition. However, it is not clear how Amazon will make a profit on sales of these items. Amazon's latest move comes as Walmart recently starting competing with its Prime service. Reuters reported that Wal-Mart plans to test a $50 per year online shipping service.
