Angelina Jolie Has Double Mastectomy. Brad Pitt Calls Her Heroic

Angelina Jolie has revealed she underwent a preventative double mastectomy. Angelina wrote in a New York Times op-ed piece, "My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy."

Angelina says in the article that her chance of developing breast cancer following the procedure has dropped from 87% to 5%. Angelina's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007. Angelina says she started with a double mastectomy because her risk of breast cancer is higher than her risk of ovarian cancer. She explained the multiple surgeries the procedure involved in the op-ed piece, including a "nipple delay," which increases the chance of saving the nipple.

Brad Pitt has called Angelina "absolutely heroic" for undergoing the procedure.
