Anne Hathaway Apologizes for Wardrobe Malfunction, Politely Puts Matt Lauer in His Place

Posted on December 13, 2012

Anne Hathaway is a class act. After her unfortunate wardrobe malfunction when she was getting out of the car at the premiere of Les Miserables, she had to hit the trail to promote the film.

First up was an interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show. Matt got destroyed by Anne's sweetness in the exchange. He opened the interview by saying "We've seen a lot of you lately" which was creepy enough. But Anne was ready. She immediately said she was sorry and that she would have stayed home, but she had to do the film promotion.

She then said, "It was obviously an unfortunate incident. It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it--and do the decent thing--sells it. And I'm sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to Les Mis, that's what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there's no social safety net. ...Yeah so let's get back to Les Mis."

Lauer was so shocked he complimented her saying that was the best turn of a question he'd ever seen. And he immediately dropped the subject. We have never heard anyone apologize for a wardrobe malfunction like that: she was filled with humility and sweetness. And relating the incident to her role in Les Mis -- well, that's just brilliant. We love Anne and think she needs an Oscar, stat. She's smart and she's talented. Take a look:
