Apple Unveils iPhone X with Face ID and All-Screen Display

Posted on September 12, 2017

Apple unveiled its new iPhone X today at a press event held at the new Steve Jobs Theater. The iPhone X features a 5.8-inch Super Retina display that runs edge-to-edge. Apple calls it an all-screen display. The Home button is gone and users now swipe up from the bottom to return to the home screen. Other new features include an A11 Bionic Chip, TrueDepth camera, Face ID, wireless charging and Animoji.

Jony Ive, Apple's chief design officer, says in the announcement, "For more than a decade, our intention has been to create an iPhone that is all display. The iPhone X is the realization of that vision. With the introduction of iPhone ten years ago, we revolutionized the mobile phone with Multi-Touch. iPhone X marks a new era for iPhone - one in which the device disappears into the experience."

OLED Panel Display

The screen is amazing. It is an OLED panel with a million-to-one contrast ratio. It follows the curve of the device. The HDR display supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. The screen is water and dust resistance. One drawback may be the black bar on the top of the screen. Some Twitter users were already complaining about it during the press event. It looks fine on the home screen but could be annoying when browsing the web.

Face ID

The Face ID recognition security measure uses 30,000 invisible IR dots to analyze the phone owner's face. The iPhone X will only unlock when the owner looks at it. Physical changes in appearance such as growing a beard or getting glasses won't impact Face ID. Apple jokingly noted that Face ID could be a problem for someone with an evil twin, such as Spock.

Apple has added portrait lighting to its front and back cameras. The dual 12-megapixel rear camera system has dual optical image stabilization. It also has a new color filter, deeper pixels and an improved Apple-designed image signal processor. The cameras have also been tuned to deliver a great AR experience.

Animoji are Animated Emoji

Apple also introduced a new type of animated emoji, called Animoji, that allows users to record and send Animoji messages that mirror their facial expressions. Some of the creatures available include an alien, unicorn, chicken and fox. There is an even a poop Animoji.

The new iPhone X will enable wireless charging thanks to its glass back design. The wireless charging solution will work with established Qi charging devices. Apple will also introduce its own wireless charging accessory in 2018 called AirPower.

$999 Starting Price

The price is much steeper than previous iPhones. It will be available in silver and space gray in 64GB and 256GB models starting at $999. Customers will be able to order iPhone X starting on Friday, October 27.
