Beth Ditto Opens and Closes Gaultier's Spring 2011 RTW Show in Paris

Posted on October 3, 2010

Jean Paul Gaultier went for a shock and awe/rock and roll vibe for his spring 2011 ready to wear show at Paris Fashion Week. Beth Ditto opened and closed the show (she sang a capella, to boot) and the models were quite diverse in both ethnicity and in size. Ford plus models Crystal Renn and Marquita Pring walked in the show.

All the models wore Joan Jett-style wigs, heavy, dark eye makeup and walked with attitude. There were lots of leather vests and jackets, sharp shouldered suits, and fishnets. The cone bra got reinvented as a metal looking breastplate, and combat boots were much in evidence here, as they were in many of the spring collections. Perhaps it's the grim economic mood of country, but never has stomping around in combat boots seemed so appropriate, even if you're wearing a floaty printed spring day dress.

For his customers who don't have a lot of punk in their souls, there were delightful printed day dresses and lovely pleated trench coats. For evening, Gaultier went for sheer black lingerie pieces with a tough, punk edge. Take a look:
