California Bans Tanning Bed Use by Minors

Posted on October 9, 2011

California has become the first state to ban minors from using tanning beds. The L.A. Times reports that California Jerry Brown has signed legislation into law that forbids minors from using tanning beds. The law takes effect January 1, 2012.

Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) told the L.A. Times that his bill is needed to protect kids under age 18 from using the dangerous tanning beds. He said, "If everyone knew the true dangers of tanning beds, they'd be shocked. Skin cancer is a rising epidemic and the leading cause of cancer death for women between 25 and 29."

A study in 2009 found that tanning beds are definitely a cause of cancer and a study in 2010 linked tanning beds to a higher melanoma risk.
