Cane-Fu: Martial Arts For Seniors

Posted on July 30, 2009

Michelle Miller reports for CBS that more than 3,500 senior citizens are studying cane fu. In cane fu seniors learn how to use canes as weapons for self-defense. Michelle Miller comments. Mark Shuey, a tae kwon do and hapkido expert, came up with the cane fu idea. He is also the founder of Cane Masters, a company that manufactures custom canes.

You can read more about cane fu self defense in USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. There is logic in the concept of turning your waking cane into a weapon. Seniors are a target of criminals and need to be as prepared as possible.

Shuey told USA Today, "A lot of people don't realize that you could stop many attacks just by knowing how to swing a cane. A lot of people say it's just a stick, but it's a great tool to learn to use."
