Carmageddon Approaches in Los Angeles, Celebrities Weigh In On Impending Freeway Closure

Posted on July 15, 2011

Los Angeles residents are dreading tonight's "Carmageddon," the official name given to the shutdown of a 10-mile stretch of one of the busiest highways in the United States. The 405 from the west side of L.A. to the Valley will be closed so a bridge can be removed. The amount of traffic that stretch of freeway carries each day is mind-boggling. The shutdown will make it very difficult to get to the Los Angeles International Airport this weekend, so travelers are making alternate plans.

L.A. celebs are tweeting about Carmageddon. Tom Hanks tweeted: "This weekend, LA! Avoid Carmageddon, Gas-zilla, 405-enstein, Grid-lock-apalooza! STAY HOME. Eat & shop local! Hanx." Adam Levine joked yesterday, "I think I want to throw a tailgate party for Carmageddon. Meet me at the 405 tomorrow. Let's party."

Rainn Wilson tweeted, "It would be so ironic if Armageddon happened during Carmageddon....I think 'Carmaggedon' is mentioned specifically in the Book of Revelations."
