David Letterman to Retire in 2015

Posted on April 3, 2014

David Letterman dropped a bombshell on his studio audience today. During the taping of the show he told the audience that he is retiring in 2015. Dave said he called CBS head Les Moonves and worked things out. He joked that finally he and longtime band leader Paul Shaffer could be married.

Letterman explained, "We don't have the timing of this precisely down, it will be at least a year or so. But at some time in the not too distant future -- 2015 for the love of god -- in fact, Paul and I will be wrapping things up and taking a hike." Take a look:

Variety reports that Leslie Moonves, CBS Chairman and CEO, said in a statement, "There is only one David Letterman. His greatness will always be remembered here, and he will certainly sit among the pantheon of this business. On a personal note, it's been a privilege to get to know Dave and to enjoy a terrific relationship. It's going to be tough to say goodbye. Fortunately, we won't have to do that for another year or so. Until then, we look forward to celebrating Dave's remarkable show and incredible talents."
