Disney Launches Disney Infinity Gaming Universe

Posted on August 24, 2013

Disney Interactive has announced the launch of its Disney Infinity gaming universe. It is available for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, Wii and Nintendo 3DS. The system features Disney Infinity character figures that come to life in the virtual Toy Box universe. Players can use the characters and Power Discs to play games and build their own unique worlds. Disney is launching Disney Infinity with starter packs featuring characters from The Incredibles, Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Incredibles, Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean starter packs feature the game software, the Infinity Base, three character figures one Power Disc pack and a trading card with a web code. The starter packs cost $74.99. The Lone Ranger and Cars Play Sets are sold separately and cost $34.99. Disney Infinity figures are also sold individually and in 3-packs. Extra plays sets and power packs can also be purchased separately.

The concept of beaming characters into virtual worlds using toy figures is not original. Activision's Skylanders video game series is based on this concept and has been very successful. The concept is a big opportunity for Disney because kids are already very familiar with Disney characters. It also gives Disney plenty of opportunity to expand the game by making new characters from other Disney and Pixar shows available. They could also add characters from the Marvel and Star Wars universes in the future.

John Pleasants, co-president, Disney Interactive, said in a statement, "Disney Infinity allows players the creative freedom to bring to life original adventures that are only limited by their own imaginations. We are excited to see how our Guests will combine Disney and Pixar characters to create all new stories that they can share with friends and family across gaming systems."
