Hookah Bars Are Springing up Everywhere as Water Pipes Get Trendy

Hookah smoking is quite popular these days with hookah bars popping all over the place. Many young people are turning to the centuries -old practice of smoking the water pipe with friends, but hookahs are bad news. Hookahs are water pipes which emit tobacco and nicotine after being chilled by water. One hookah session gives you the equivalent of smoking one pack of cigarettes. The smoke feels less harsh because it is filtered through water, but it has all the risks of regular cigarettes, including lung cancer and heart disease. Many times the tobacco is flavored with orange, cinnamon or mint making it seem harmless to young people.

Cigarette smoking is declining in the U.S., but e-cigarette and hookah use is skyrocketing. In fact, 40% of college students reported that they had smoked a hookah in the last year. One sixty minute hookah session exposes you to 200 times the volume of tobacco smoke found in one single cigarette.This is making the FDA really unhappy. It has moved to regulate e-cigarettes and hookahs the same way it regulates tobacco products such as cigarettes. CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta takes a look at this unhealthy, growing trend:
