It's a girl! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a new addition to the family: a little princess who was born at 8:34 this morning British time. The Duchess was driven to the hospital at 6:00 am in labor, and delivered just two and a half hours later.

The name has not yet been released. She will be called Her Royal Highness, Princess [name] of Cambridge. The birth was announced on the Kensington Palace Twitter first. The little princess weighs 8lbs 3oz and Prince William was present for the birth. Prince Charles recently said he was hoping the baby would be a girl, so he must be ecstatic today.

The new princess is now fourth in line to the throne, which moves Prince Harry to fifth in line. The prime minister put forth legislation before the birth of Prince George to ensure that the first born child -- whether a girl or a boy -- would inherit the throne. The other countries in the Commonwealth were asked to approve the change in case Prince William's first child was a girl. But the first child was a boy -- Prince George. But the change should stand for future generations.

William and Kate are asking other families who are welcoming a new baby to join in the celebration and post a photo so they can share it on their blog. The palace tweeted, "It’s a girl! If you are welcoming a new addition to your family, post a photo using #WelcomeToTheFamily for our blog."
