Martha Stewart to Host Cooking School Show on PBS

Posted on April 19, 2012

Martha Stewart announced today that she will be hosting a new cooking show on PBS called Martha Stewart's Cooking School. The weekly show will debut this fall and is inspired by her bestselling book, Martha Stewart's Cooking School: Lessons and Recipes for the Home Cook. PBS station WETA in Washington, D.C. will present the show, which will air on PBS stations across the nation.

Episodes will be 30 minutes long and will feature Martha demonstrating classic cooking techniques and basics. Using her signature, step-by-step, how-to teaching process, Martha will illustrate the building blocks of recipes everyone should know (from roasting to poaching to braising and blanching). Viewers will have Martha by their side instructing them how to select the very best ingredients, how to make the perfect pot roast, how to pan saute a whole fish, how to make stocks and why they're essential to making sauces and delicious soups. In addition, every episode will feature Martha imparting tips and tricks, inspiring and educating home cooks everywhere.

Martha said in a statement, "PBS is the perfect home for this series. We'll show viewers how to prepare classic dishes as well as how to use proper techniques. This new series combines so many of my passions: teaching and encouraging others. We will break down classic recipes for home cooks and inspire them to add their unique twist. I'm excited to get into the kitchen and connect with audiences across the nation."

Martha's talk show on the Hallmark Channel is ending this May, but repeats will air throughout the summer. Martha took a bit of dig at Hallmark by tweeting, "The response to our announcement for a PBS cooking school series is wonderful. Easy access to PBS as opposed to Hallmark will be wonderful."

She's absolutely right. It's much easier to find Martha on PBS than it is on the Hallmark channel -- that's the same problem Oprah Winfrey is having with OWN. No one can remember which channel it's on. PBS is ingrained in people's minds from pre-cable days and usually has a nice, low channel number.
