Menorah Islands Project Would Build Artificial Islands off the Coast of Israel

Posted on May 17, 2016

The Menorah Islands Project would build 9 artificial islands off the coast of Israel. The islands would be in the shape of a candelabra as the artist's rendering above shows.

Seven of the artificial islands would be permanent, with plans for residential areas, retail, and institutes of higher learning. The organization says the two outermost islands on either side would emerge from the water at different points throughout the year. The islands also would be used to build technologically advanced cities.

Joseph Aoun, the Menorah Islands Project founder and coordinator, says in a statement, "The project is an ambitious vision for the future of the Middle East and has the potential to bring together the greatest and most committed minds to build a place where ethnic origin and political alliance no longer matter. A beautiful place to live, work, and vacation, these artificial islands in the Mediterranean Sea would enhance the entire Middle East through education, scientific advancements, and environmentally-friendly practices."
