Movie Ticket Prices Hit $20 Mark
Posted on May 21, 2010Movie ticket prices jumped considerably in March. CBS News says ticket prices are up $1 to $3 nationwide last month. Prices are highest at IMAX theaters. Call it the "Avatar effect. Now the Wall Street Journal reports they are going up again. In some Manhattan IMAX theaters consumers will be paying $20 for a ticket for the first time. The prices come as the family friendly Shrek Forever After hits theaters.
Several theaters will charge $20 per adult ticket to IMAX showings of the animated 3-D family film "Shrek Forever After," the fourth "Shrek" installment from DreamWorks Animation. The theaters include the AMC theater in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood, AMC Loews 34, AMC Loews Lincoln Square and AMC Empire 42nd Street.Prices for movies are really getting steep. Most families can't afford $20 a ticket. They will likely be cutting back on the $4 or $5 waters, soft drinks and popcorn if they do decide to pay the premium for IMAX tickets.
The increases weren't officially announced, but were reflected in prices posted Wednesday on movie-ticketing Web sites such as Fandango.com and tracked by BTIG LLC media analyst Richard Greenfield.
