Posted on October 20, 2016

Nintendo has announced the launch of Nintendo Switch. The new system is designed to be both a home gaming console and a portable device. Nintendo also announced dozens of publisher partners for Switch. It will arrive in stores in March 2017.

Nintendo Switch uses a Nintendo Switch Dock to connect to the TV. It transitions to portable mode when Switch is lifted out of the dock. The device has detachable Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo says multiple Switch systems can be used for local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America, says in the announcement, "Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like. It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries."

Wired reports that Switch is powered by a Nvidia Tegra mobile processor. Wired also says some games will be sold on SD card-sized memory cards. It will also likely be possible to download games.

Nintendo released this video about Switch. It shows the device being used in a living room in front of a TV and then removed and used outdoors, in an airport and in a car. Take a look:
