Nintendo Discontinues Recently Launched NES Classic

NES Classic Console

Nintendo offered the NES Classic Edition last year at a cheap price. The $59.99 console enabled gamers to play 30 classic Nintendo games, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Kirby's Adventure. It was launched in time for the 2016 holiday shopping season.

Here we are a few months later and it looks like that may be it for the NES Classic. BuzzFeed reports that people are mad it is being discontinued. It was a hot item with Nintendo selling over 1.5 million units.

TechCrunch reports that Nintendo said in a statement, "NES Classic Edition wasn't intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans."

Nintendo also said, "We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."

Nintendo is obviously focused on its recently launched Switch console but it is a surprise to see a company quickly abandon a recently launched popular product. Nintendo could start up production again if they wanted to for the holidays but your best bet in the short-term will be a third party seller on eBay or Amazon.
