Report: Best Buy to Offer Price Matching With Some Online Retailers This Holiday

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Best Buy plans to match some online retailer's prices this holiday season. This is a change from the retailer's present price match guarantee and an attempt to reduce showrooming, where people browse the Best Buy store and then make a purchase online at a competitor's website. The WSJ says 60% of people who enter a Best Buy don't make a purchase. Best Buy would like to change that.
The price matching will not be in effect during the crucial Black Friday to Cyber Monday period. The offer runs through November 17 and then goes on hiatus. It will pick back up again on November 27 and run until December 24.
The Wall Street Journal also reports, in a separate story, that there are several notable exclusions to the deal. The offer is good for about twenty online retailers. The list does include Amazon.com. Best Buy sales staff will only match a price if specifically asked to do so, which is not unusual with price matching offers. The WSJ also says Best Buy can choose not to match a price if it doesn't want to. Best Buy has not yet released the details on its website, but we can't imagine Best Buy is going to want to match short-duration sales either, such as Amazon's lightning deal prices. Even with these restrictions, the price matching offer should help Best Buy reduce the showrooming effect it experiences.
