Reports: Katie Holmes Blindsided Tom Cruise With Divorce Filing
Posted on June 29, 2012The plot thickens in the Katie Holmes/Tom Cruise divorce saga. Apparently Katie blindsided Tom with a surprise divorce filing in Manhattan. Tom's rep issued this statement: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out."
The L.A. Times reports that Katie has hired two top East Coast divorce attorneys. When asked about the couple's prenuptial agreement Tom's attorney Bert Fields replied, "I can't comment on that. It will all come out." As to whether the divorce fight will get nasty, Fields said, "I would hope that it's not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person."
Other sources say this is all about Tom wanting to raise Suri as a Scientologist, and Katie wanting no part of the controversial church. Some sources say that Katie has plenty of money from the prenup and has filed for sole legal custody because in New York judges prefer to have one parent making decisions about schooling, religion etc. In California, judges prefer to have joint legal custody, which does tend to lead to battles over these kinds of issues. New York cases can be sealed, which is another reason Katie filed there. In California, the papers are public record.
