Rio Defeats Madea to Win Box Office for Second Straight Weekend

Rio edged out Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family to win the box office for the second straight weekend. The animated film about jungle birds made another $26.8 million to bring its total to over $81 million. Tyler Perry's movie made $25.8 million despite appearing in just 2,288 theaters - over 1,500 less than Rio. Water for Elephants opened in third and made $17.5 million. Hop finished fourth in its fourth week in theaters. It made $12.4 million, which pushed in box office gross over the $100 million mark.
Scream 4 fell to the fifth spot in its second week in theaters. The horror film was followed by Disneynature's African Cats, which had a solid debut and made $6.4 million in just 1,220 theaters. You can see the complete box office report here.
