Sesame Street: Bert and Ernie are Not Gay

Posted on August 12, 2011

Photo of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie In the past month there have been online petitions asking for Sesame Street muppets Bert and Ernie to come out as a gay couple and get married. News producers picked up the story, and finally Sesame Workshop finally had to issue an official statement about the issue. Bert and Ernie are not gay. They are just good friends.

Here is the official statement from Sesame Workshop:
"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."
Bert and Ernie are about getting along with people who aren't like you. They're not about anything else, such as sexuality. That discussion belongs on another show entirely.
