Shrek Wins Box Office Again Despite Challenges from SATC 2 and Prince of Persia

Shrek Forever After held on to the weekend box office crown despite strong challenges from Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Shrek Forever After made $43.3 million to win the weekend. Sex and the City 2 made $32 million and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time made over $30 million. Prince of Persia was followed by the other summer blockbusters Iron Man 2, which added $16 million to its total, and Robin Hood, which made another $10 million.

BoxOfficeMojo reports that the Memorial Day weekend overall is very weak with business down 20% from the same period in 2009.

This Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be the lowest-grossing in nine years and the slowest in at least 15 years in terms of estimated attendance. Overall business was down around 20 percent from the same period last year.

Shrek will have to fend off the family friendly Marmaduke next weekend to have any chance of winning the box office for a third straight weekend.
