Snoop Dogg Changes Name to Snoop Lion After Spiritual Awakening

Posted on July 31, 2012

Snoop Dogg is Snoop Dogg no more. The New York Times reports that Snoop Dogg has changed his name to Snoop Lion after a ceremony with Rastafarian priests. Snoop says he underwent a spiritual awakening in Jamaica.

Snoop explained to a group of reporters at the Caribbean restaurant Miss Lily's in New York: "I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated. I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn't have my third eye open, but it's wide open right now."

The reporters were gathered for the release of the first single from Snoop's new album Reincarnated which he wrote and recorded in Jamaica. Snoop said he wants to renounce the violence in music and has written songs in a more traditional style of reggae. Snoop says now he can perform his songs for kids and grandkids, which he could not do with his rap songs. Snoop is a father of three and being a dad has changed his outlook on music, he says.

Snoop said, "Rap is not a challenge to me. I had enough of that. It's not appealing to me no more. I don't have no challenges. I'm 'Uncle Snoop' in rap. When you get to be an uncle, you need to find a new profession so you can start over and be fresh again. I want to be a kid again." A documentary film crew followed Snoop during his time in Jamaica and it will tell the story of his evolution to a non-violent type of music.
