Sunday Funnies Comic Strips Debut on Stamps
Posted on July 16, 2010
The U.S. Postal Service celebrates five newspaper comic strips with its new Sunday Funnies stamps. The 44-cent First-Class stamps honor comic strips: Archie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes. The Sarge loses it in a conversation with Private Beetle Baily in the stamp image above.
U.S. Postal Service Eastern Area Vice President Megan Brennan says in the announcement, "Like stamps, comic strips often tell a story through humor, adventure, fantasy and sometimes even drama. Today, we are gathered to commemorate five of our country's most beloved comic strips and dedicate an amazing stamp pane that represents a unique part of American culture."
Archie shares his chocolate shake with Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper in the stamp pictured above. The Garfield stamp also features his pal Odie. Dennis can be seen running off to commit more mischief in the Dennis the Menace stamp. The comic strip stamps are a cool idea.
