Texas Back to School Sales Tax Free Weekend Begins

Posted on August 20, 2010

Starting today through Sunday, August 22nd, there will be no sales tax on clothing and school supplies sold in the state of Texas. The legislature recently updated the law to include school supplies that cost under $100.

So, what's covered by the law? The tax exemption applies to most clothing and footwear priced under $100. Sales tax varies around the state, but the average sales tax is around 8%, although some areas have an 8.25% rate. This year, backpacks for elementary school kids that cost under $100 are also exempt.

The malls will be crowded this weekend, but it's definitely worth it if you have a lot of shopping to do. The State of Texas has this handy guide that answers all your questions about what's tax free and what's not.
