The Show Must Go On: Broadway Ignores Mayor Bloomberg and Keeps Weekend Schedule
Posted on August 26, 2011The show must go on. The Broadway League has posted a Weather Alert on its website telling audiences that all Broadway and off-Broadway shows will go on as scheduled this weekend, which is just crazy. The notice says:
Weather alertBecause of Hurricane Irene, there will be no mass transit in New York City from Saturday at noon until Monday, or perhaps later. Mayor Bloomberg has asked everyone to stay indoors from Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. to Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. to avoid dangerous winds and flying debris. And, of course, there could also be major power outages and flooding.
As on now, Broadway shows in NYC for the coming weekend are playing as scheduled. For questions about exchange or refund policies, please contact your point of purchase. We will update this page with any additional information we receive.
We love Broadway, but this is not safe. Hopefully, the Broadway League will change its stance. Theater goers: please do not go out in a hurricane to see a matinee of Mamma Mia.
Update 4:45 p.m.ET: Playbill reports that theater owners and producers have come to their senses and that all Broadway shows are canceled for Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and August 27th. Good call.
