Tiger Woods Nike Apparel Not Selling Well in Golf Stores
Posted on August 24, 2010Tiger Woods is having a terrible year. He has fallen to 83rd on the PGA Tour's money list. Bloomberg reports that sales of Tiger Woods Nike apparel and gear have dropped at golf sporting goods stores. His uber-philandering ways are probably partly to blame, but his golfing slump is most likely to be the cause of the lack of interest in Tiger products. Bloomberg says 10% of Nike's total sales come from the Tiger Woods brand.
The clothing buyer for the Roger Dunn golf stores told Bloomberg that apparel is a hot item right now - unless it is the Tiger Woods brand.
"Apparel is hot right now," said Laura Dowdy, the clothing buyer for Roger Dunn, which has more than 20 stores. "Everything -- Adidas, Puma, Nike, except the Tiger brand."Sales of Tiger Woods apparel are also down at Golfsmith stores even though sales of other golf apparel are climbing. When Nike stuck with Tiger Woods they probably expected him to continue performing on the golf course. That has not happened. Nike told Bloomberg they are still sticking by Tiger Woods becase he's a "phenomenal athlete with over 70 wins on the PGA Tour and 95 wins worldwide." Nike is also not yet discounting the brand.
