2016 Planet Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service will launch Forever stamps that feature the planets and Pluto later this year. The Pluto stamps contain images from the New Horizons spacecraft. Pluto was once known as the ninth planet in our solar system but was reclassified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union in 2006.

The planet stamps will include eight colorful Forever stamps with images of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Text on the back of the stamp will explain how the images were obtained. Some show the true color of the planet as it would appear if you were visiting in space while others use the near-infrared spectrum. The stamps will be dedicated between May 28 and June 4 at the World Stamp Show in New York City.

There will be two stamps in the Pluto set. The Pluto stamps include an image obtained by New Horizons during last year's amazing mission. The stamp image contains the now-famous heart-shaped Pluto feature. The other stamp contains an artist's impression of the New Horizons spacecraft. The Pluto stamps will also be unveiled at the World Stamp Show.

Update 5-31-16: The stamps have arrived at U.S. Post Offices. They can be found here and here at store.usps.com.
