Video: Denzel Washington on Broadway

Denzel Washington returned to Broadway in a revival of the August Wilson drama, Fences, which also stars Viola Davis. In this clip Denzel talks about the universal themes of the play, which revolves around family relationships. Denzel talks about how his own father influenced how he plays the role of Troy Maxson, a former Negro League star who ended up as a garbage man. He is a bitter, flawed man who also tries to do the right thing. In the original Broadway run, the role was played by James Earle Jones, who won a Tony Award for his nuanced portrayal of Troy.
