Walmart Employees Organizing Black Friday Walkout

Posted on November 15, 2012

CNN reports that some Walmart workers are planning to walkout during Black Friday on Friday, November 23. This would obviously make it difficult for shoppers at any stores where employees suddenly departed. Some of Walmart's deals start at 8 pm on Thanksgiving, but the mega retailer's Black Friday event has three phases, including a sale that starts at 5 a.m. on Black Friday.

CNN says there are two union groups, Our Walmart and Making Change, and a watchdog group, Corporate Action Network, trying to organize the Black Friday walkout. The groups are using social media sites, including YouTube, Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.

AOL reports that there are 1,000 protests being planned in at least 5 major cities for Black Friday. Walmart is downplaying the possibility of the walkout having a significant impact on Black Friday. CNN says a spokesperson for Walmart told them the number of workers planning to walk out is "very small."

Walmart released the following statement about the possibility of walkouts on Black Friday:
"This is just another exaggerated publicity campaign aimed at generating headlines to mislead our customers and associates.

"We have a great group of associates at Walmart. We'll have more than one million associates working throughout the holiday weekend and they're excited about our Black Friday plans this year. This is the Super Bowl for retailers and we're ready.

"We've been working on our Black Friday plans for almost a year now and we're prepared to have a great event. Our associates care about providing a great customer experience on Black Friday and we're confident that's what customers will have at Walmart this year.

"The fact is, these ongoing tactics being orchestrated by the UFCW are unlawful and we will act to protect our associates and customers from this ongoing illegal conduct."
