Hermes Himalaya Handbag Sells for Record $377,000 at Christie's Auction

A luxury Birkin handbag has set a record as the most expensive handbag ever sold. The rare white Hermes Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Birkin 30 sold for $377,000 at a Christie's auction in Hong Kong last week. The bag features 18K white gold and diamond hardware.

The bag was given a condition report grade of 1 by Christie's. It was made in 2008. Here is part of the description: "Featuring 245 F-color, VVS clarity diamond for a total diamond carat weight of 9.84 set in 174.4 g 18k white gold. with clochette, lock, keys, exotic card, felt cover, raincover, small dustbag, dustbag, small box and box."

CNN reports that the record setting auction involved "15 minutes of intense bidding." CNN also says that Hermes only makes one or two Diamond Himalaya bags each year.

Christie's says on its site that the Himalaya Birkin is considered the "Holy Grail in a handbag collection." The Crocodile hide is dyed to get the snow-capped Himalayas effect. The Himalaya Kelly handbag is considered the rarest handbag in the world.
