Walgreens to Close Drugstore.com and Beauty.com Online Stores

Posted on August 1, 2016

Walgreens is going to close its drugstore.com and beauty.com websites. This will enable it to focus on its main ecommerce site. The two sites are expected to close by the end of September 2016.

PC World reports on Walgreens' plans in an article citing the Wall Street Journal. PC World says Walgreens has been looking to curb costs and the site closures are part of a much larger $1.5 billion in reduction in annual costs.

Focusing on multiple storefronts can be costly as it ramps up advertising and marketing expenses. There are also extra costs associated with running separate order fulfillment and processing. Walgreens will be able to focus on walgreens.com, which also carries health and beauty products.

Walgreens purchaed drugstore.com in a 2011 deal. Dealbook reported in 2011 that the deal was valued at $409 million.

Both the drugstore.com and beauty.com sites now redirect to walgreens.com.
