Barneys New York Opens Manhattan Flagship Store in Chelsea

Posted on February 16, 2016

Barneys New York has opened a new flagship store in Manhattan. The location in Chelsea returns the retailer to the same block where it was founded in 1923 and had a presence through the 1990s. The new location is on 7th Avenue between 16th Street and 17th Street.

The new flagship has 55,000 square feet of retail space spanning five floors. It was designed by Steven Harris Architects. The photograph above shows the ground floor of the store and the photo below shows the spiraling central staircase. Barneys says the spiral staircase serves as an ode to the store design of the original Barneys.

Barneys says the downtown flagship will carry curated merchandise and top designer fashions. It will also launch exclusive capsule collections from Valentino, Alexander Wang, Elder Statesman, and Sidney Garber. The store includes a Blind Barber barbershop and a Freds restaurant.

Barneys New York CEO Mark Lee says in a statement, "The opening of our new Downtown flagship is a unique homecoming for Barneys New York. Born as a single brick and mortar location over 90 years ago, Barneys New York returns to the same New York City block as a modern 21st century retail force that will offer the downtown customer a unique and unprecedented customer experience."

The Freds restaurant features a 36 foot mural by Los Angeles-based painter Conor Thompson. The decor in the L-shaped Italian restaurant includes marble tables, terrazzo floors, and rosewood paneling.
