Gucci: RTW Spring 2011

Posted on September 25, 2010

Gucci creative director, Frida Giannini showed her spring 2011 ready to wear collection at Milan Fashion Week. Frida told Hilary Alexander that she designed the clothes for "modern amazons; an intellectual tribe of exotic women, seen through an urban lens."

Model Raquel Zimmerman opened the show wearing bright silk separates cinched at the waist with a gorgeous gold embossed belt which featured long tassels in the back. Alas, Frida is determined that women wear harem pants, and it's just not happening. The harem pants got even more extreme in a black tuxedo evening ensemble that featured a crotch that nearly hit the model's knees.

But other than the harem pants, there were lovely separates in bright solid colors of jade, cinnamon, amethyst, black and beige. The African tribal influence was evident in the cocktail minidresses which represented an enormous amount of handwork. The pieces were embellished with feathers, beads, crystals and Perspex, with lots of fringe. Frida also mentioned Marakkech and many of the separates certainly had an Yves Saint Laurent vibe.

The heels were high: sandals and cage leather booties predominated. The handbags came in all sizes: there were clutches, shoulder bags and huge, slouchy bags. We especially loved the gold clutches embellished with giant gold tassels. Frida wisely kept the models' hair very severe. The makeup featured a pop of very bright red color on the lips.
