Rare Hermes Himalyan Birkin Bag Sells for Over $300,000 at Christie's Auction

Posted on June 6, 2016

A rare Hermes Birkin bag has sold for $300,168 setting a record for the most expensive handbag sale. The handbag was sold at Christie's Hong Kong 30th anniversary sale. The bag is made with white matte Himalayan crocodile leather and features 18k white gold and diamond hardware.

Christie's had estimated the value to be $194,074 to $258,765 prior to the sale. Christie's said in a release, "The diamond pieces created by Hermes are exceptional, but none are nearly as iconic as the Himalaya. It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced each year, globally, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags."

CNN reports that the Hermes handbag was sold to a private Asian collector. The previous handbag record was held by a shiny fuchsia crocodile Hermes Birkin bag that sold for $222,000 in a Christie's auction last year. The bag features 18-carat white gold and diamond hardware.
