Barbie Adds Three New Body Types: Curvy, Tall and Petite

Posted on February 3, 2016

Mattel is expanding its Barbie Fashionista collection. Three new body types have been added. They are are tall, curvy and petite. Mattel is also adding several new skin tones to the collection.

Of the three new figures the curvy figure is the most groundbreaking. Kids can now play with a Barbie that has a more human-like figure instead of just the thin and impossibly proportioned original. The four sizes include tall, curvy, petite and original.

The 2016 Barbie Fashionista collection will include 33 new dolls. The line includes 30 hair colors, 24 hair styles, 22 eye colors, 14 face sculpts, 7 skin tone sand the 4 previously mentioned body types.

Richard Dickson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mattel, says in a statement, "For more than 55 years, Barbie has been a global, cultural icon and a source of inspiration and imagination to millions of girls around the world. Barbie reflects the world girls see around them. Her ability to evolve and grow with the times, while staying true to her spirit, is central to why Barbie is the number one fashion doll in the world."

One of the main things to note with the new dolls is not all clothes are going to fit all dolls. This also means that many of the old Barbie clothes will not fit the new Barbie body types.

The dolls will retail for $9.99 each. They are available for purchase on ShopMattel.com and will arrive at other retailers in Spring 2016.

Evelyn Mazzocco, Senior Vice President and Global General Manager Barbie, says, "We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand – these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them – the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them."

Mazzocco also says, "We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty."
