SpongeBob SquarePants Forever Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service has released a collection of SpongeBob SquarePants Forever stamps. The collection features characters from the Nickelodeon animated series.

The new stamps celebrate the show's 25th anniversary. The stamps include two bright yellow stamps showcasing close-ups of SpongeBob's happy face. There is a stamp with a group of Bikini Bottom residents including Sandy Cheeks, Patrick Star, Plankton, Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Gary and Squidward Tentacles.. There is also a stamp with SpongeBob and Patrick on the sandy ocean floor.

Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, designed the stamps using artwork provided by Nickelodeon. The development of the popular series can be traced to Stephen Hillenburg, a marine biologist and animator. His initial idea came in the form of an educational comic book he created while working at a marine sciences center in Southern California. The comic book, The Intertidal Zone featured anthropomorphic sea creatures, including a sponge, living in an underwater town. This concept later served as the foundation for the show.

U.S. Postal Service says in a statement, "The Postal Service’s stamp program strives to appeal to a wide audience, both young and old, and is excited to bring these fun stamps to the American public. SpongeBob is widely considered nostalgic for many viewers evoking positive memories and feelings. USPS anticipates these stamps will provide the same positive feeling for senders and receivers alike."
