Stackable Lego USB Hubs

Posted on May 16, 2009

A stackable LEGO USB hub would be the ultimate LEGO computer accessory. You could charge up your devices while also building a fun LEGO structure on top of it or attaching LEGO minifigures.

This seemingly obvious LEGO item has never fully materialized. LEGO did create the the WeDo 2.0 Smart Hub set in 2009. The Brick Owl says the buildable hub was used in at least two different LEGO sets. It was part of the LEGO Mindstorm educational line. It is also known as the 9581 Education Mindstorms LEGO USB Hub. Unfortunately, it was not quite what we are all looking for.

LEGO has some hubs for its Powered-up product line but these are not USB hubs. They are hubs with with 2 input/output ports that act as connection points for LEGO Powered Up components not for connecting USB devices.

You could build your own LEGO USB hub by following the concept shown in an Instructables guide. The project developer, MisterM, says, "I made this just now with the kids, it's the circuit from a cheap USB hub in a Lego enclosure. It looks cooler than the original, and has optional minifigure cable holders!"

There was an unauthorized LEGO hub from Systown. These USB Hubs resembled Lego bricks. Technabob says these cool hubs are made by Systown. The USB Hubs were available only from Korean retailer DCX for 15,920 KRW, about $12 U.S.

LEGO really needs to manufacture or license a big colorful stackable USB hub like these for people to have at their desks. LEGO once collaborated with PNY for a LEGO USB Flash drive. They should do the same thing for a USB hub.
