Jerry Seinfeld's Wife Wins Cookbook Lawsuit

Posted on September 13, 2009

Author Missy Chase Lapine sued Jerry Seinfeld's wife, Jessica, for plagiarizing her cookbook. Both of the cookbooks contained recipes for sneaking recipes into children's food. The New York Daily News reports that Manhattan Federal Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain ruled that there was no copyright violation.

Author Missy Chase Lapine contended Seinfeld ripped of her book, "The Sneaky Chef." Both books show parents how to sneak vegetables their kids' food.

Swain dismissed Lapine's claims of trademark infringement, saying the books were like apples and oranges.

She said Seinfeld's book was "bright and cheerful" while Lapine's was "dry and text-heavy," and noted no one can copyright the idea of hiding healthy foods inside tasty ones.

It sounds like the judge liked Jessica Seinfeld's book better since he called Missy Chase Lapine's book "dry and text-heavy." It doesn't seem like it was necessary for the judge to make a comment that one of the author's cookbooks was "dry."

Jessica Seinfeld's book is called Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food and Missy Chase Lapine's book - which was published first - is called The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals.
