Trekkies Building Star Trek Captain's Chairs

Posted on March 22, 2009

Star Trek fans know voyages into space are highly unlikely in their lifetimes. But this knowledge won't stop their vivid imaginations. Some Trekkies are even busy building their own captain's chairs.

The New York Times has an article, called "Getting Their Kirk On," about Star Trek fans who are building their own replicas of Captain Kirk's chair from Star Trek. Some Trekkies are even making the chairs the centerpiece of their homes.

Star Trek fan Scott Veazie built a replica chair. He told the Times, "The original show was the first one I saw. It was so idealistic. A lot of us kids wanted to be Captain Kirk — and part of that was the chair."

Bruce Boyd is another Trekkie who has built a captain's chair. He says, "Everyone wants to sit in it. There's some sort of charisma there. It's hard to explain. I know it's not real, but the minute I sit in it, the hairs stand up on the back of my neck."

If you don't have time to build your own Star Trek Captain's Chair, you can buy one like the one pictured above from Sky Mall. The officially licensed replica retails for $2,717 and promises "a working swivel design, light-up controls and sound effects from the legendary Star Trek series."
