Amazon Announces Amazon Key In-Home Delivery Service

Posted on October 26, 2017

Amazon has announced a unique new in-home delivery service called Amazon Key. The service has packages delivered directly inside your home. The Amazon delivery person will unlock your door if you are not home using a smart lock and leave your packages inside. Walmart has been testing a similar concept for grocery deliveries where the groceries are delivered straight to your fridge.

Amazon Key involves the use of a security camera that records video of people entering your home and a smart lock. The smart lock enables an Amazon delivery person to request access to a home and be allowed entry through an encrypted authentication process. The delivery is recorded and the door is securely locked after the delivery person leaves.

Peter Larsen, Vice President of Delivery Technology, Amazon, says in the announcement, "Amazon Key gives customers peace of mind knowing their orders have been safely delivered to their homes and are waiting for them when they walk through their doors. Now, Prime members can select in-home delivery and conveniently see their packages being delivered right from their mobile phones."

Amazon has unveiled an In-Home Kit that people can use to install the technology required for Amazon Key. The new service is exclusively for Amazon Prime members. Amazon has also launched a new camera, Amazon Cloud Cam, that can be used for Amazon Key.

Amazon Key will be available on November 8 in 37 cities and surrounding areas and will later be expanded to more regions. Amazon released this video showing how the service works:
